NaNoWriMo... Yes!

I realized this week that the way my classes are set up, I'll have more time to write my novel than I realized.

We're on the back end of the semester, and my classes are always easier when we get into November.

Yay!  I'm so excited.

Sometimes You Gotta Teach in Green Socks

Cross post from https://profbooneeng1301.blogspot.com/

Well, today was fun.  It rained most of the day, which meant I had to drive to my schools in the rain.  I hate driving in the rain.  I spent my full lunch time sitting in the car, watching comedy videos on YouTube as I waited out the rain.

When I went to my last school, I had to cross the river.  So, it was the street, but the water was high enough that I was wading through water.  My left foot got wet; shoe, sock, and feet.  My right shoe only got wet.  I was miserable and cold when I got into the building.  The secretary let me borrow her floor heater for a few minutes.  That warmed me up, but I still had a wet left foot.

I asked the nurse if she had a pair of socks.  Thankfully, she did.  Went to class, fussed at them for being so disruptive, got them writing their in-class essay, then changed into the socks.

I taught class in striped green socks (no shoes).  Mind you, I didn’t have on anything green.  My color scheme was brown and yellow.

I’m a fighter.  I’ma make it do what it do!

Emotional, Tired, and Drained

Today in 1301 (three times), I discussed the quote for the Explanatory Quote essay we wrote today.  It was a hard day.

The Quote: Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. -Benjamin Franklin

I told my class about Botham Jean, which had me in tears, amongst other emotions in the front of my students.  I ain't even like that.  I don't like discussing sensitive topics in my classes.  But, if my tear filled discourse inspired one student to think differently about police brutality, then those few minutes of emotion was worth it.

Week 4: How to Make It in College

This week in 1301, we're writing a summary/response essay on Brian O'Keeny's article entitled, "How to Make It in College, Now that You're Here" (http://www.brian-t-murphy.com/documents/Okeeney.docx).

It is a great article.  I use it for my Freshman Comp 1 course to give the students advice that I think will help them.  In all honesty, I wish I had this article when I was going to college.

Lord we pray for adjunct college professors.  We pray that they will have good success this year.  We pray that wherever their feet trod, that they will be a blessing.  Many of them teach at multiple colleges to make a livable wage, we pray that they have gas money to fill their tanks, lunch money to fill their bellies, and technology to fill their minds.  We pray that they have a heart for their students, so that they can teach them to the best of their abilities.  If they wish to become full-time professors, we pray that You will open of doors for them.  When they become discouraged, we pray that they will have an encounter with former or current students that will encourage them to continue with their teaching.  Let them be able to get the help they need from their deans, department chairs, and administration.  Give them a heart of love, a tongue of calming truth, a mouth of genuineness, a mind of honesty, hands of tenderness, and ears of attentiveness. College Professors Are Educators, Too...

Often, we forget that college professors are educators, too.  They provide education for our students.  It’s on a different level, but they still deal with similar issues that elementary and secondary educators deal with.  Be sure to whisper a word of prayer for them as you pray.

Also, college students still need prayer, even though they are “adults.”  They have issues while in college.  Be sure to whisper a word of prayer for them as well when you pray.

Day 18: Seasoned Teachers

Scripture:
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58

Prayer:
Lord we pray for seasoned teachers.  They’ve worked a long time educating students.  We pray that You give them a renewed energy and excitement to teach the students.  Let them mentor younger teachers.  Let them continue to be a guide for students.  Give them new insight on how to be an encouragement to all who they meet at their school.  If they are nearing retirement, let them have everything they need to retire.  Give them financial security so that they can retire when they want to do so.  Give them a heart of love, a tongue of calming truth, a mouth of genuineness, a mind of honesty, hands of tenderness, and ears of attentiveness. Let them know when to speak, when to listen, and when to act.  Be their guide and compass as they navigate the school year.  Thank You. Amen.

Prayer:
Lord we pray for teachers who have been teaching for a while.  We pray that they’ve created a system that works for them, and that they continue to grow and evolve to become better teachers.  We pray that they will help teachers who are younger than them in their career.  Give them new insight on how to manage their classes, students, time, and life.  Be a fence around them and shield them from the temptation to be listless and indifferent.  Encourage their hearts to continue teaching with the enthusiasm they began their career with.  Give them a heart of love, a tongue of calming truth, a mouth of genuineness, a mind of honesty, hands of tenderness, and ears of attentiveness. Let them know when to speak, when to listen, and when to act.  Be their guide and compass as they navigate the school year.  Thank You. Amen.

Scripture:
When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 1 Corinthians 13:11

Prayer:
Lord, we thank You for young people who are becoming young adults.  This is a moment in their lives when they must grow up and begin to make decisions for themselves.  Lord, remind their parents that they’ve done their job and must let their child become a young adult.  Give their parents peace as they allow their student to go off into the world.  Let the student be eager to learn on a new level.  Open their minds to learn more and dig deeper into the knowledge they will receive.  Let them not get weary when things get hard for them.  give them a determination to push through and concentrate on what they need to learn.  We know having fun is part of the college life but remind them that their education must come first.  Give them professors who will nurture their love of education and guide them to become life-long learners.  Let them have an excellent first year in college. Grades Submitted

I've submitted the grades for Summer 2018.

Day 13: Twelfth Graders

Scripture:
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:3

Prayer:
Lord, we thank You for students who are completing their secondary education.  As these students begin their final year in public education, give them an excitement about accomplishing a goal that is worthy to be applauded.  Help them to put forth their best effort.  We know that seniors in high school can become complacent and lethargic from having been in school so many years.  We ask that they don’t get senioritis.  Remind their parents that they must give their seniors room to spread their wings and become adults.  Help each student with any decisions they may have to make regarding college or their future after high school.  Give them a sense of urgency when it comes to applying to college and for scholarships.  Let them not procrastinate in these matters.  Let them be able to meet all the financial demands that they will have as they graduate.  Open of the windows of heaven and let them have an abundance of scholarships and school choices.  In the end Lord, let them make the best decision possible for them.  Let them not be swayed by peer pressure and outside influences.  Let them stay on track.  Give them a year of excellence.  Thank You. Amen.

Go a Step Further:
If you know of any high school seniors, give them a hug or a word of encouragement to complete this school year.  If you are able, bless them with a small donation that can go towards something for their senior year.

Day 12: Ninth Graders

Scripture:
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19

Prayer:
Lord, we thank You for students who are growing up to become young people.  As the young people enter a new aspect of their education, we pray that their encounter with secondary education is a good one.  Lord, let them know that they must grow up and begin to take seriously their path in life.  Let their parents nurture them and give them room to grow up freely.  We know these students will make mistakes, but Lord, let the mistakes be as minimal as possible.  Let them learn from their mistakes.  Encourage their hearts and minds to want to learn.  Let them encounter teachers who will help them grow into excellent students who develop a love of life-long learning.  Let them encounter upper classmen that will help them and mentor them as they go through the 9th grade.  Let this first year of high school be an amazing year filled with love, learning, nurturing, and growth. Thank You. Amen.

Go a Step Further:
If you drive by any high school(s) take a moment to whisper this prayer as you drive by.  If you don’t drive by any high school(s), purposely drive by a school and pray this prayer.

Prayer:
Lord we thank You for young children who are going to school for the first time.  Give these pre-kindergartners and kindergartners an excitement about going to school for the first time.  Let then be ready to go to school and learn.  We pray that their parents will let them go with as little drama as possible.  Lord, let these new learners have excellent teachers who will introduce then to education in a way that it will spark their love of learning, encourage their minds to learn, and create a life-long learner.  We pray that these new learners will learn all that they can and grow as young people.  We pray that their first few weeks of school will go smoothly with as few tears as possible.  We thank You for young minds to nurture. Thank You. Amen.

I was at Richland College today getting some work done.  I'm getting excited about 2018. #bravoto2018

Day 9: For Parents

Scripture:
Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5

Prayer:
Lord we thank You for the parents who care and pray for their students.  We pray that families will put their faith in You.  We pray that parents will raise their children as unto You.  We pray that parents will guide them in the correct way that will glorify You.  We pray that families will be united with encouragement for their student.  Let the parents give their children the independence they need to succeed, but still be there to intervene when necessary.  Let the parents work with educators to do what’s best for their student.  Let the parents be cordial to the other students, teachers, staff, and administrators.  Lord, let the parents lead their children to You and encourage them to be witnesses for You.  Thank You. Amen.

26 Days of Prayer 4 Schools

There are 26 days left before I start classes.  The Lord laid it on my heart to pray a specific pray each day for schools.  So, from August 1 (tomorrow) through August 26, I’ll be praying for schools.  I’m sharing this idea with you and ask that you join me in prayer.  Each day I’ll post a scripture, a prayer, and a challenge to go a step further.

This time will be a blessing for me, and I’m excited about it.  If you chose to join me, I pray this time is a blessing to you.
